If we needed reminding, the current high price of gasoline tells us again that energy— its availability, price, and security— is a central part of our lives and will remain so for the foreseeable future. This year’s series explores the essential ideas behind each of the key pieces of U. S. energy policy, reviewing not only the most important energy technologies, such as petroleum, nuclear energy, and a variety of renewables, but also the economics and politics that shape the decisions about what to produce and how to price it. All of these issues are essential to understanding this vital, and often misunderstood, sphere of activity.
